The American Swedish Institute July 13 1977: The following passage appears in the book Swedish Passenger Arrivals in New York 1820-1850, page 69. The book was written by Dr. Nils William Olsson, 4970 Sentinel Drive, Sumner, Maryland 20016. It is conceivable that he may have further information in his files about living relatives, and you could write to him if you wish. Perhaps he could direct you to someone in the California area who could pursue this further.
“August Emil Engelberg, born in Borås, April 4, 1821, son to Johan Engelberg, leather manufacturer (Sämskmakare), and Eva Sohlhem. In America he reversed his Christian names, calling himself Emil August. He enlisted in New York City Aug. 1 1846 as a private in Co. F of the First New York Volunteer Regiment (later the Seventh Regiment) for service in California and the war with Mexico. He sailed around Cape Horn aboard the Thomas H Perkins and arrived in San Francisco Bay March 6, 1847, being one of the first Swedes to set foot in San Francisco. He was given an honourable discharge in Santa Barbara, California Sept. 8, 1848. After trying his luck in the gold fields of Eldorado County he came back to San Francisco, where he became part owner, first of a grocery store, and later a bakery and coffee shop. He was a charter member of the Scandinavian Society of San Francisco, which was organized Feb, 28, 1859. On July 4, 1887 he was given a bounty land claim as a veteran of the Mexican war. He seems to have lived in San Francisco the remainder of his life. A son E. A. Engelberg, was living in Sonora, California in 1910.
